History Gallery

In the History Gallery, the visitor explores Oman across the ages. This gallery was designed in a chronological approach, starting from the geological formation of Oman to the rise of the Renaissance, along with highlighting two themes: maritime heritage and aflaj, due to their connection to Oman's history. This gallery consists of nine pavilions: Land of Oman, Early Settlers, Civilisation of Magan, Maritime Heritage, Aflaj, Kingdom of Oman, Embracing Islam, Al Ya’ariba Dynasty and Al Busaidi Dynasty.

Land of Oman

This is the first pavilion in the History Gallery; it introduces visitors to the geological processes which have shaped the land of Oman through millions of years, resulting in the diversity of fauna, flora and geological treasures that we can find today.

Early Settlers

This pavilion tells the story of the early settlers in Oman, starting from nomadic hunter-gatherers in the Paleolithic period until settlement in the Neolithic period, using virtual technologies that enhance the visitor’s experience.

Civilisation of Magan

This pavilion introduces the achievements of the Magan Civilisation and Bronze Age settlements, depicting life using different technologies. A group of the civilisational achievements during the Bronze Age were reconstructed in an engaging method.

Aflaj

This pavilion introduces the aflaj irrigation system, its origins, typologies and engineering, as well as its importance throughout Oman’s history. It also highlights the intangible heritage of aflaj.

Kingdom of Oman

This pavilion introduces visitors to the great developments Oman witnessed in the Iron Age, the story behind the name Oman, and the importance of trade, agriculture, camels and horses. It also touches on the religious beliefs that prevailed in Oman at that time. Its main design features are two models of two thriving cities in the Iron Age using film projection.

Embracing Islam

This pavilion is the entrance for visitors to the history of embracing Islam in Oman, as well as the intellectual growth, the most prominent scholars, the maritime routes and the political forces that ruled Oman from 8 AH/629 CE to 1034 AH/1624 CE. The pavilion features a suspended ribbon on which many films are shown.

Al Ya’ariba Dynasty

This pavilion introduces visitors to the history of the Al Ya’ariba Imams and and how Oman witnessed a period of prosperity after the unification of the country and the expulsion of the Portuguese, due to the increase in commercial revenues, the strength of the naval fleet, and intellectual growth. The pavilion also displays a 360-degree film about the emergence of the Al Ya'ariba Dynasty.

Al Busaidi Dynasty

This pavilion introduces visitors to the history of the Al Busaidi Dynasty and its achievements through four main exhibits: Formation Years, Expanding the Empire, Changing Fortunes, and Road to Unity.
